WELCOME TO BOY SCOUTS and TROOP 834

Troop 834 was chartered in 1978 and since then has become one of the most active and respected units in the area. We are dedicated to the development of character, citizenship, physical and mental fitness. Our program provides the opportunity for leadership development and the learning of scout skills through a variety of activities. Troop 834 is not an extension of a school or other organization but an entity unto itself. We have an extremely active calendar that involves a comprehensive outdoor program that is fun and challenging. We consistently receive the Quality Unit Award.

BOY SCOUTING

The Boy Scout program is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light Award or have completed the fifth grade, or who are 11 through 17 years old.

AIMS, IDEALS & METHODS OF SCOUTING

The ideals of Boy Scouting are spelled out in the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Scout motto, and the Scout slogan. The Boy Scout measures himself against these ideals and continually tries to improve.

We use the methods of scouting: Patrols, the Outdoor Program, Advancement and Association with Adults to promote personal growth and leadership development.

TROOP REGISTRATION FEE - $165.00

Fees include Registration*, Boy’s Life Subscription, Troop and Committee Expenses, Events, Awards and more.

*Registration is paid to the United States Foundation for International Scouting in support of Boys Scouts of America World Scouting commitments.

Registration Fees do not cover all troop expenses. Fundraising through Christmas Tree Recycling, Evergreen Sales and the Art & Wind Jamba Juice Booth help cover extra expenses.

Most camping and some hiking/backpacking activities require extra cost-covering payments if you choose to participate. Boys can earn credit by participating in fundraisers and these credits can be used to pay for camps and outings.

Financial assistance is available to boys who would not be able to participate otherwise. Please contact the Committee Chair.

THE BOY SCOUT UNIFORM

Uniforms are required at all Troop 834 events and outings. In summertime and for certain activities, a class B t-shirt and jeans may be worn. During the school year and for all official scout functions, class A dress uniform is required.

Class A uniform costs range between $75-$100 and are not included in your registration fee. An additional $30 charge is payable to Troop 834 for the class B t-shirt, troop number patches and neckerchief.

A handbook is also needed. Merit badge books may also be purchased as needed.

Uniforms, handbooks and other scouting items can be purchased at the Scout Shop in Pleasant Hill, McCallou’s in Danville or Dom’s Outfitters in Livermore.

EQUIPMENT & GEAR

Troop 834 has an extensive quartermasters supply of tents, backpacks and gear that is available for all scouts within the troop to use or borrow.

TROOP MEETINGS

Troop Meetings are held on Tuesdays from 7:15-8:45 at our facility called “the Shack” on Holly Court, off the west end of Bollinger Canyon Rd. The first Tuesday of the month is a patrol leadership council (PLC) meeting for scouts holding leadership positions for that term. All other Tuesdays are regular troop meetings.

TROOP COMMITTEE & VOLUNTEERS

The troop parent committee handles organizational and financial activities in monthly meetings. The only way we are able to provide this experience for your son is through the involvement of all the families in the troop. Volunteers are needed at all levels. Choose a job that fits your talents and make a difference.

SHACK MAINTENANCE

We are responsible for maintaining our meeting place. Volunteer commitment of 4 hours per scout per year is required and there is a related deposit.

SCOUTMASTERS

Troop 834 has about 20 trained assistant scoutmasters. That is a 4:1 scout:leader ratio. Scoutmasters provide mentoring but the scouts run the program at Troop 834. Talk to us if you are interested in becoming an ASM.
